Research of the Section for Artificial Intelligence focusses on Artificial Intelligence technology and its use in the medical domain. This includes the development of software systems for intelligent data analysis, knowledge-based systems technology for decision support and therapy planning, cognitive modelling, and natural language processing which deals with automatic processing of text and speech.
The research of the department focusses on different areas of Artificial Intelligence, among them Natural Language Processing, Intelligent Data Analysis, Cognitive Modelling, and Knowledge-Based Systems.
The department offers lectures in Artificial Intelligence on an introductory as well as an advanced level. With regard to particular study programmes, we offer courses for students of Medicine and Medical Informatics, as well as for students of the Middle European Master Programme in Cognitive Science. Courses are also offered for computer science students in a cooperation with the University of Vienna.
The Department was founded in 1977 as an institute of the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. In 2004, it became part of the Center for Brain Research at the newly founded Medical University of Vienna. Since 2010 it is a Section of the Center for Medical Statistics, Informatics, and Intelligent Systems of the MUW.
